Harry’s Story

Climate Change and EnvironmentSustainable LivelihoodsVolunteering

“Volunteering has changed my outlook on life, and it has pushed me to get out of my comfort zone and to be honest I wouldn’t have it any other way now.”

Harry’s passion for volunteering was sparked by time spent volunteering in Zambia. After moving to Wales, Harry embarked on an International Relations MA with the view to pursuing a career in the international sector.

“I have spent time volunteering and working in Zambia previously so when I moved to Wales, I wanted to get involved with a charity working in Zambia. I got in touch with Hub Cymru Africa who quickly put me in contact with Giakonda Solar Schools; this turned out to be a great match.”

Harry started volunteering for Hub Cymru Africa in the Summer of 2022 helping Giakonda with their social media. Harry’s journey with Giakonda so far has taken him back to Zambia to help with a workshop on coding in Siavonga.

“It was amazing to get a chance to go back to Zambia, I was lucky enough to see the incredible work of Giakonda Solar Schools first hand. As a new volunteer who mainly helps with social media, it was the perfect trip to meet the Zambian team, learn more about their projects and get some photos and videos for social media. I think it is so important for volunteers to visit projects and meet the local people involved. In my view you cannot get a true picture without visiting the projects your charity is helping to support.”

Since coming back from Zambia, Harry has continued his volunteering with Giakonda, finding it a great fit for him. Harry has decided to move over to volunteering for Giakonda permanently marking an end to his time with Hub Cymru Africa.

“Hub Cymru Africa has done incredible work supporting charities like Giakonda, I always felt supported by the team at Hub Cymru Africa, and I would highly recommend volunteering in any way you can with them.”
