What small global solidarity charities, health partnerships, and Fair Trade campaigners need to know

Running a small charity often means juggling many responsibilities, and keeping on top of charity and electoral law can feel daunting, especially during an election year. If you’ve ever wondered how to share your personal political views without crossing legal lines, how your charity can talk about elections in Wales, or what the pre-election period actually means for your work, this session is designed for you.

Join Hub Cymru Africa for a practical, friendly one‑hour webinar with The Electoral Commission in Wales. We’ll break down the key rules that apply to charities during the pre-election period, with simple explanations and real‑world examples relevant to small, volunteer‑led organisations working in global solidarity projects.

In this session, you will learn:

  • How to express personal political views without putting your charity at risk
  • What your charity can and cannot say about elections
  • What the pre-election period is, and whether it affects your activities
  • How to engage with MS candidates appropriately and confidently
  • How these rules apply specifically to Wales–Africa organisations.

We’ll finish with a short discussion on what these guidelines mean in practice for small charities like yours, especially those without paid staff, who want to stay compliant while still advocating for their communities and partners.

Speakers:

  • Paul Shackson, Welsh Refugee Council
  • Pete Mills, Electoral Commission Wales
  • James Wilkinson, Charities Commission
  • Julian Rosser, Hub Cymru Africa
