How to tell an African story

Ethical storytelling in practice

Anti-RacismHuman RightsWebinar Online event Zoom Register

This practical and interactive session is facilitated by Lerato Mogoatlhe, Head of Communications and Digital Marketing at Africa No Filter. The session is based on the resource ‘How to tell an African Story in 8 steps’.

We all know that the way we communicate about our work matters. We want to ensure that the narratives we tell are ethical and avoid harmful stereotypical narratives which focus on an Africa that is broken and where its people lack agency and are dependent on outsiders.

This webinar takes us through practical guidance to help us consciously move away from these narratives and move towards:

  • considering power dynamics
  • creating better, more authentic stories
  • representing lived experiences more accurately
  • encouraging mutual respect, and
  • preserving the dignity of those whose story is being told, including working through informed consent.

This event will help Wales and Africa partnerships to reflect on the way they communicate about what they do, and why this matters.

This event offers a space for learning, reflection and discussion and creates opportunities to continue to shift and reframe the narrative around our work.

This session builds on our previous event with Moky Mokura, executive Director of Africa No Filter.
