The Global Health Partnerships Cymru Annual Lecture, hosted by Hub Cymru Africa, is Wales’ flagship annual global health lecture.

Convening every year, the event reflects on key issues shaping global health. This year’s lecture comes at a critical time, as significant aid cuts continue to affect health systems, partnerships, and progress toward global commitments.

We are pleased to welcome Dr. Peter Baker, Deputy Director of the Global Health Policy Program and Policy Fellow at the Centre for Global Development, as our keynote speaker.

This year’s theme, “Crisis in Global Health Aid”, will explore the growing challenges facing global health financing and the implications for achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

2025 was the year the tower of cards in global health aid came crashing down. The US, once the world’s largest funder, suddenly shut USAID, and the UK and most other G7 nations subsequently began cutting too. Clinics shut, drugs stopped being delivered and lives were lost. This was a shock, but what the shock really revealed was deep flaws in the how global health aid is organised, and how poorly government funding and donor funding works for people. In this lecture, Pete Baker, deputy director of the global health policy programme at the Center for Global Development, will discuss the current crisis in global health aid, and what 2026 may bring.

The event will bring together health professionals, researchers, students, and individuals committed to global solidarity, international development and health equity.

Dr. Baker brings extensive expertise in health financing, with a principal interest in the evidence, methods, and policy approaches needed to strengthen global health systems in a time of constrained resources.

The lecture will be chaired by Dr Tony Jewell, former Chief Medical Officer for Wales and former Chair of Wales and Africa Health Links Network.
