Hub Cymru Africa has appointed Julian Rosser as its new Head of Partnership.

Julian takes up the position leading Hub Cymru Africa after more than 35 years working and volunteering in the third sector.

Originally from Bridgend, Julian is a passionate advocate and campaigner for global solidarity, having volunteered and worked for organisations including Friends of the Earth Cymru, Disasters Emergency Committee Cymru, Oxfam Cymru, and Fair Trade Wales. Most recently, Julian led Hub Cymru Africa’s team of Development Support Managers to support Wales-Africa links and other Welsh groups working in global solidarity.

Julian starts this role at a pivotal time for the Hub Cymru Africa Partnership. As the organisation enters its second decade, next year will see a new Welsh Government and an international context in which rich countries are cutting international aid spending and global solidarity is under threat.

Welcoming his appointment, Chair of Hub Cymru Africa Tom Baker said:

“I’m really pleased to welcome Julian into the Head of Partnership role. He will need no introduction to many across the sector. His breadth of experience over the last thirty years will make him an effective leader, and I’m excited to see him succeed and to lead the partnership forward at this crucial moment.”

Reacting to his appointment, Julian said:

“It’s a privilege to have been appointed as the new Head of Hub Cymru Africa. I’ve campaigned for and supported sustainable development and international solidarity for more than 35 years, and have loved working for Hub Cymru Africa the last few years as Senior Development Support Manager.

“I am impressed and inspired daily by the brilliant and diverse people and organisations that make up the sector in Wales. I’m excited to guide the partnership and the team into Hub Cymru Africa’s second decade and hope to make that even more successful than the first.”

Chief Executive of Sub-Sahara Advisory Panel, Fadhili Maghiya said:

“I’m delighted to see Julian taking up this role within our team as Hub Cymru Africa enters its second decade. Julian has long experience of working with communities across Wales to promote global solidarity and I look forward to working with him more to do just that.”

Notes to editors:

Hub Cymru Africa is a partnership comprising the Welsh Centre for International Affairs (WCIA), Fair Trade Wales, Sub-Sahara Advisory Panel and Global Health Partnerships Cymru.

Hub Cymru Africa is Wales’s leading international development and global solidarity organisation. It was formed in April 2015 to bring together the work of its partners and to support organisations across Wales to build sustainable links and projects in partnership with organisations in Africa and around the world. It supports diverse and vibrant groups and individuals in Wales—fair trade campaigners, diasporas, NHS staff, community- and faith-based organisations, and charities—to contribute to socially responsible global development.

Hub Cymru Africa’s work focuses principally on health, education, livelihoods and the environment. Through awareness-raising, policy and advocacy, community mobilisation and mentoring and development support, it helps the voluntary and public sector in Wales to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals through international development.

Hub Cymru Africa is funded through grants from the Welsh Government’s Wales and Africa Programme and the UK Government’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.
