Eligibility:: We welcome proposals from: African researchers, NLP practitioners, and technologists language communities, cultural organisations, and local AI innovators, Non-profits, research institutions, social enterprises, and grassroots networks Applicants must: Be based in Africa and legally registered or a consortium including an African-based and legally registered organisation.

Masakhane is a pan-African initiative aimed at tackling the underrepresentation of African languages in natural language processing (NLP) and AI. Our mission is to bring together researchers, technologists, linguists, and community members from across the continent to collaborate on AI that is inclusive and representative of Africa’s linguistic diversity. We are inviting proposals for three strategic, community-driven projects.

Grant Size:: USD $50,000 to USD $250,000
Eligibility:: Non-governmental organisations, community groups, universities and small private enterprises may apply for funding. Individuals must work with civil society organisations to develop applications rather than apply directly. Organisations must have their own bank account and be authorized under relevant national laws to receive charitable contributions.
