Grant Fundraising for Beginners

Shared Learning Event Online event Zoom Register

Fundraising through grants can help increase your organisation’s income significantly, but it can be daunting when you’re at the beginning of your fundraising journey.

From getting your project plan ready and finding funders, to applying and maintaining relationships, join us and gain confidence as we go through some key elements of grant fundraising and point you towards helpful tools and resources.

The session will also include case studies from members of the Welsh global solidarity community who have taken that step successfully. Deana Owen from Friends of Monze and Geoff Lloyd from PONT will share their experience of working with grant giving organisations.

Dr Geoff Lloyd

Dr Geoff Lloyd is a practising GP in Pontypridd. In his early years he worked abroad in Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia and Nepal, eventually understanding that the old model of Western doctors managing the health services in low and middle-income countries was outdated.

After completing a Diploma of Tropical Medicine in 1989, Dr Lloyd understood that access to primary health care is a top priority for every community in the world that is locally-led through town twinning.

In 2005 PONT was established which twinned Rhondda Cynon Taf in Wales with Mbale in Uganda. It now seeks to provide primary health care and ambulance services to 2 million people.

Deana Owen

A long and successful career as a nurse, Owen first went to Zambia as a young newly qualified nurse in 1969, just after the country gained its independence.

Most of her work was health visiting, liaising with a variety of services to promote good health in a particular area. When she retired in 2012, Owen had the opportunity to return to Zambia for 3 months as a volunteer. She joined other retired nurses to visit families affected by HIV/AIDS. It was here that Owen met their partner organisation in the town of Monze; they continue to work closely together to deliver projects today as part of the charity “Friends of Monze”.

Owen has received a lot of support and advice from Hub Cymru Africa, Bridgend Association of Voluntary Organisation, her church and others to set up the charity Friends of Monze. Chairing and managing the charity is her passion. Through it, she has met many different people, gained knowledge and new skills, and utilised her life skills and experience.
