What we do

We represent the global solidarity sector in Wales.

The Welsh Dragon against a Pride flag

We offer one-to-one advice, mentoring, training, events, awareness-raising, policy and advocacy to increase the capacity and effectiveness of the charitable and public organisations we work with. Hub Cymru Africa supports the diverse and vibrant groups and individuals in Wales – fair trade campaigners, African diaspora, NHS staff, community and faith-based organisations, and charities – to contribute to socially responsible global development.

We support these partnerships and groups to grow (through fundraising and recruiting new volunteers and trustees), mitigate risks (such as due diligence in partnerships, safeguarding, and financial management), enhance quality (through working to best practices such as impact reporting and community-designed projects), network with funders and peers, and improve the diversity and inclusion of the African diaspora in Wales.

We are funded through grants from the Welsh Government and the UK Government Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office. As the principal support organisation for the Wales and Africa programme, we are a catalyst for action in Wales, contributing to development outcomes in Africa and beyond and establishing Wales as a globally responsible nation.

Themes of work

Explore the themes we work in here.

Anti-Racism

The aid sector exists to alleviate poverty, but the power dynamics of aid can reinforce power structures and systems that grew through colonisation. We must recognise this, and work with our partners openly and honestly to address racism.

Arts and Culture

Creative expression is a powerful force for connection, solidarity, and storytelling. Artistic collaborations that challenges injustice, celebrate heritage, and amplify voices is invaluable.

Climate Change and Environment

Communities in low and middle-income countries are at the frontlines of climate change. Locally led action for climate justice that supports resilience, protects biodiversity, and promotes environmental equity is important.

Diaspora

Diaspora communities are central to building bridges of solidarity between Wales, Africa and the world. We support diaspora leadership, knowledge-sharing, and voice in development and global responsibility.

Fair Trade

Fair Trade is a global movement that puts people and the planet before profit. When producers receive a fair price for their goods it leads to an improved working environment and a better quality of life for them and their families.

Diversity and Inclusion

A truly fair and sustainable world depends on inclusion, where all people are valued, including the LGBTQ+ community and people with disabilities. We are committed to dismantling barriers and championing equity across all our work.

Faith-based

Faith plays a vital role in many communities and can be a source of hope, solidarity, and action. We work with faith-based groups that are committed to compassion, justice, and global responsibility.

Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment

Gender inequality is a root cause of poverty and injustice. Challenging discrimination and promoting women’s leadership, voice, and rights in all areas of life is essential to global solidarity.

Health

Good health is a fundamental human right. We support health links between Wales and partners in low and middle-income countries that strengthen systems, increase access, and prioritise the needs of marginalised groups. The diaspora workforce is a pillar of strength in the NHS.

Human Rights

We believe in a world where everyone lives with dignity and freedom. Our partnerships support those defending rights and challenging injustice, from grassroots to global levels. Women’s rights are human rights. Trans rights are human rights. Gay rights are human rights.

Lifelong Learning

Learning is a lifelong journey that supports individuals and transforms communities. We support access to education, skills, and critical thinking as tools for justice and global citizenship.

Sustainable Livelihoods

Sustainable livelihoods are key to dignity and resilience. We support approaches that centre local knowledge, protect the environment, and create fair opportunities for all, especially future generations.

Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)

Access to clean water and sanitation is essential for health, dignity, and development. We support groups, charities and communities to ensure safe water and hygiene for all.
