The Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OWISA)
Type of project: OWISA works to build vibrant and tolerant democracies whose governments are accountable and open to the participation of all people. They seek proposals covering the following themes: 1) Expression & Participation including resisting the capture of democratic and electoral processes; 2) Security & Rights including advancing the security and safety for women and girls and sexual and gender minorities; 3) Accountability & Justice including supporting access to justice and the rights of the marginalised; 4) Women´s Rights; 5) Special Initiatives including re-invigorating pan-African civil society: decolonizing academia and research.
Location: Angola, Cameroon, Chad, Cote d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Eswatini, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Pan-African and sub-regional proposals are also welcome.
Eligibility: OWISA primarily awards grants to African organizations. They may provide funding to Africa-based international organizations committed to African leadership, voice and agency on exception. Grants can be made to public institutions, sub-regional and continental organizations as well as unregistered movements and/or individuals.
