Darwin Initiative – Innovation and Capability & Capacity 

Type of project:  The Darwin Initiative is one of Defra’s Biodiversity Challenge Funds. It competitively awards grants for biodiversity conservation and multidimensional poverty reduction activities helping countries meet their commitments under the Multilateral Environment Agreements, Sustainable Development Goals, and national policy. There are two open calls: 1) Darwin Initiative Innovation is aimed at projects intending to test a novel approach that if proven could scale to deliver results for biodiversity conservation and poverty reduction; 2) Darwin Initiative Capability & Capacity invites projects that focus on developing the capability and capacity of national and local organisations to efficiently deliver effective and successful biodiversity conservation – poverty reduction projects.

Location: 70% of funding will be allocated to LMICs, however Upper Middle-Income countries are eligible.

Grant size: Darwin Initiative Innovation will provide grants between £10,000 to £200,000 for projects lasting between 1 to 2 years maximum. Darwin Initiative Capability & Capacity will provide grants between £50,000 – £200,000 between for projects lasting 1 to 2 years maximum.
