What should Wales-Uganda links know and what can we do to support LGBTI rights?
At the end of May 2023, President Yoweri Museveni signed one of the world’s toughest anti-LGBTI laws, including the death penalty for “aggravated homosexuality” and prison sentences for “promoting or encouraging homosexuality”. The law includes sanctions for organisations which allow premises to be used for illegal activities and provides penalties for people who do not report their suspicions to the authorities.
This new law will have implications for civil society groups in Uganda and for their partners in Wales.
In this webinar, we will be joined by a leading Ugandan activist, representatives of the Welsh Government and other organisations working in Uganda. It is aimed at Welsh organisations working in Uganda and well as representatives of their partner organisations.
Aims
- Welsh organisations working in Uganda better understand the current context and potential risks to their staff and volunteers and are prepared to manage those risks;
- Welsh groups hear the concerns of African LGBTI-led groups for their human rights.
