We are pleased to present Dr Matthew Harris to deliver this year’s Wales and Africa Health Links Network Annual Lecture, hosted by Dr Tony Jewell:

“Decolonising healthcare solutions: Low cost innovations from low-income countries”

In this lecture, Dr Harris will offer a pathway for the NHS to adopt low-cost but effective innovations from areas of the world traditionally seen as beneficiaries rather than providers of help and support.

In an era of increasing demand and dwindling resources, and where the Covid-19 pandemic has illustrated the structural limitations of the current system, he provides examples of simple, frugal but high-quality alternatives to current practice and explores the barriers to adopting them.

Matthew Harris is a Clinical Senior Lecturer and Honorary NHS Consultant in Public Health Medicine, Imperial College London and Director of Postgraduate Taught Programmes in the School of Public Health.

He has published over 150 articles on global health, reverse and frugal innovation, decolonization and health services research. He was formerly a US Commonwealth Fund Harkness Fellow (2014-15), a UK Govt Global Health Advisor (2012-14), an HIV Technical Advisor in Mozambique (2005), a WHO Immunization Consultant in Ethiopia (2004) and a Family Doctor in the Brazilian primary care system (1999-2003).
